The Cyprus Institute (www.cyi.ac.cy) is a non-profit research and educational institution of international composition, governed by a Board of Trustees comprising world-renown scientists and prominent political and entrepreneurial Leaders. The Institute is characterised by a novel philosophy on interdisciplinary research and education, and cutting-edge infrastructure to materialize it, which support a scientific, technological and innovative orientation aiming at world-class standards of excellence.

Research at CyI is carried out in cross-disciplinary Centers that address problems of great scholarly relevance, global significance and regional focus. Shared infrastructures incorporating state-of-the-art technology support the research activities of the five CyI-Research-Centers:

Energy, Environment and Water Research Center (EEWRC)

EEWRC was established as the first research center of The Cyprus Institute in partnership with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. EEWRC also collaborates closely with the Cyprus Research and Innovation Foundation, as well as many national institutions and organizations in Cyprus and the region. EEWRC focuses on societally relevant research and innovation on topics related to the Energy & Renewables, Water and Natural Resources. (A more detailed description of EEWRC can be found here).

Science and Technology in Archaeology and Culture Research Center (STARC)

STARC is a leading centre for Science and Technology Research in Archaeology and Cultural Heritage in the Eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East (EMME) in partnership with the Fondation des Sciences du Patrimoine in France. Cutting-edge laboratory infrastructure and instrumentation help to explore rigorous, broad inquiries that drive cross-disciplinary research and innovation efforts in collaboration with local, regional and international partners and stakeholders. (A more detailed description of STARC can be found here).

Computation-based Science and Technology Research Center (CaSToRC)

The Computation-based Science and Technology Research Centre (CaSToRC) pioneers in research, development, and deployment of computational and large-scale data methodologies for the advancement of scientific and technological disciplines. Key areas of expertise are Machine Learning (ML) and Artificial Intelligence (AI), Computational Modeling and Simulation of Materials, High Performance Computing (HPC) and Computational Physics, and Quantum Computing (QC). CaSToRC has been designated as Cyprus’ National Competence Centre (NCC) in HPC, and as such utilizes its expertise to support and educate user communities in academia, industry, and government. (A more detailed description of CaSToRC can be found here).

Climate and Atmosphere Research Center (CARE-C)

Established via the competitive and prestigious European Union’s Horizon 2020 – TEAMING programme, in cooperation with Advanced Partners, the Max Planck Institute for Chemistry in Mainz in Germany, the Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission (CEA) in France, and the University of Helsinki (UHEL) in Finland, CARE-C is a knowledge hub for environmental and climate change research and sustainable solutions, addressing the societal challenges of Cyprus and the Eastern Mediterranean and Middle East region. (A more detailed description of CARE-C can be found here).

Science and Technology Driven Policy and Innovation Research Center (STeDI-RC)

STeDI-RC, the fifth Research Center of the Cyprus Institute, was launched in 2018 following a strategic decision taken by the Institute’s Board of Trustees, and started operations in the academic year 2022-23. It is a cross-disciplinary endeavor to engage in policy research and innovation addressing today’s sustainability challenges, with the aim to produce trusted and actionable knowledge, which is a cornerstone of better policymaking.
