João Albuquerque completed his Master of Architecture at the University of Sciences and Technology of Coimbra and earned a postgraduate MAA degree from IAAC in Barcelona. He joined BIG Copenhagen in 2008 and moved to Barcelona in 2019 to help establish BIG Barcelona, becoming Partner in 2021. Today, João leads projects across Southern Europe, Middle East, India, and South America, with experience from masterplans and high-rise towers to cultural, commercial and research-based projects. Currently, João oversees projects such as the development of the Dubai Masterplan in UAE and the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre in Seville, in Spain.
